The benefits of essential oils & aromatherapy

Aromatherapy, a practice that dates back thousands of years, involves using aromatic plant components for both physical and psychological benefits. Let’s delve into its fascinating history and explore its main benefits and uses!

Aromatherapy goes way back in time

Did you know that the earliest records of aromatherapy trace back to at least 4000 BC? Or that in 2500 BC Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) incorporated acupuncture, shiatsu, and herbal remedies? Equally interesting is the fact that during the World War II, French army doctor Jean Valnet treated wounded soldiers with essential oils.

Benefits of Aromatherapy

Relaxation: Aromatherapy promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and improves sleep quality.

Pain Relief: Certain oils, like lavender and peppermint, have analgesic properties.

Immune Support: Some oils boost immunity and fight infections.

II. Psychological Benefits

Mood Enhancement: Aromas can positively impact emotions and mood.

Stress Reduction: Inhaling essential oils can alleviate anxiety and tension.

Cognitive Function: Certain scents enhance focus, memory, and mental clarity.

Main Uses of Aromatherapy

1. Inhalation

Direct Inhalation: Breathe in essential oils directly from a diffuser or tissue.

Steam Inhalation: Add oils to hot water and inhale the steam.

2. Topical Application

Dilute essential oils in carrier oils and apply to the skin for massage or skincare.

Baths: Add a few drops of essential oil to a warm bath for relaxation.

Compresses: Soak a cloth in an oil-infused water solution and apply to the affected area.

3. Aromatherapy Jewelry

Wear diffuser necklaces or bracelets to enjoy aromas throughout the day.

Remember, while aromatherapy offers numerous benefits, it’s essential to use high-quality, pure essential oils and consult a professional if you have specific health concerns.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are composed of very powerful aromatic molecules, and it is important to respect the methods of use, dosages and precautions for use in order to avoid any risk.

Essential oil, the most powerful and evolved extract of the plant kingdom, is present in so-called aromatic plants. It is obtained in the majority of cases by steam distillation of the volatile aromatic compounds of the plant, except for citrus essences which are obtained by simple cold expression of the fruit peel. The composition of active biochemical molecules, both very rich and complex, and very variable depending on the essential oil considered, will determine the multiple properties and activities of this on the body.

The different ways of using essential oils

There are many and varied ways to use essential oils. Finding the best way to use them depends on the desired effect or objective, taking into account their composition and the condition of the person using them, such as age, state of health, possible pregnancy, etc.

For use in cosmetics, essential oils, well diluted, will have a topical action, whereas for aromatherapy, they can have a topical or systemic action.

In addition to their health benefits, essential oils can be used simply to perfume or purify the environment, for personal beauty and well-being, but also to make products for home care.
