Petitgrain oil is one of three essential oils obtained from the bitter orange tree. Petitgrain oil is distilled from young leaves and twigs, another kind of oil is obtained from the peel of the fruit (essence used for aperitifs, liqueurs), and the most expensive of them, neroli, is extracted from the flowers. Unripe bitter oranges are the size of cherries, hence the name «petit grain», meaning «small berries».
